Topic guides
Product priorities and delivery
Use this guide when a customer request, sales commitment or delivery constraint needs a decision from product, engineering and revenue leaders. Bring the customer problem and the work already promised.
VEN selected these readings and wrote the planning prompts. The current readings address customer evidence, evaluation scope and engineering workflow constraints. They provide context for a priority discussion rather than a complete product-management method.
Separate the problem from the requested feature
Section titled “Separate the problem from the requested feature”Start with Customer feedback and early retention. Its triage questions distinguish the intended task, observed problem, impact, type of work and existing commitment.
Check whether the proposed change addresses an observed problem, a contracted requirement or an assumption your team still needs to test. Identify who will confirm whether the customer can complete the work after delivery.
Review the commitment before expanding scope
Section titled “Review the commitment before expanding scope”Read Pilots that convert for evaluation scope and success criteria. Use Strategic partnerships and IP when another company helps fund development or expects rights in the resulting work.
Record what the team agreed to deliver, who can approve a change and what the customer needs to decide afterward. Obtain the appropriate review before changing contractual or intellectual-property commitments.
Examine the delivery constraint
Section titled “Examine the delivery constraint”Read Why AI isn’t making engineering 10x faster for a session discussion of design, coding, review, testing, deployment and operations. The speakers’ accounts concern their own AI workflows; they do not establish your team’s delivery speed.
Map the work your team expects a proposed change to pass through. Ask where it waits, who must review it and which other commitment would move if you prioritize it. Use your own observations to assess the constraint.
Priority decision worksheet
Section titled “Priority decision worksheet”VEN editorial worksheet. We wrote these fields for a cross-functional priority discussion.
PRODUCT PRIORITY DECISION
Customer problem and evidence:Existing promise, evaluation criterion or contractual scope:Proposed change and expected customer result:Work required across product, engineering and delivery:Constraint observed and evidence:Other work this would defer:Commercial or IP review needed:Decision-maker and teams affected:Scope and next action approved:How we will check delivery and customer use:Next review date:Connect an approved priority change to Running against the plan. Use AI and the business model when the proposal also changes workflow costs, pricing or product value.
